Never Get Tricked by Used Car Dealers Again – (part 4)

auto363 » 29 August 2009 » In Used Car » No Comments

Another trick employed by used car dealers is appraising your trade-in car at a far lesser price than what you initially offer.

Car Dealer Tactic #5

Some car salespersons connive with mechanics just to undervalue your trade in car. If you think your car is worth more than it really is, then you hope that you just might get a clever salesperson who will give in and agree to an excessive price for your trade in. Now you might be pleased by this, because you may be thinking that you are ‘putting one over’ the dealer. Not so. Generally, the sales person will look up on the computer or in the Car Dealers Price Guide to find out the going price for your trade in and will start from there. And if you don’t watch out, you might end up shouldering all the car costs in the end. How, you ask? Well, when the dealer charges TOO much for your new car.

Let’s say the car dealer contacts you before your new car is delivered. When the niceties are over, you will be told that there is an issue with the trade in. You will be asked to bring the car into the workshop for further inspection. When your vehicle has been in the garage for 60 minutes, (having nothing done to it), the salesperson will tell you that the mechanic claims to have found it is really only worth $500 less than what they have offered for it. Thus, the salesperson gets to pocket an extra $500 if you give in and agree your used car is really worth far lesser.

Car Dealer Tactic #6

Salespeople sometimes quote prices of a car excluding the on-road costs. If you don’t specifically ask for on-road costs to be included, the salesperson will most likely give you the excluding on-road costs price. Of course, you have to be guarded because your contract may be drawn up on this proviso. Trouble is that when you are ready to sign, the ‘quoted’ price of the car, will then be understated by many thousands of dollars.

To make sure this does not happen to you, shop around for car prices online. There, you’ll get a wide array of information on car trends, models, and car price range. Armed with such knowledge, you are at a much better bargaining position with the car dealer. You know what your used car is worth in the market, and you know how far a leeway you can go without losing too much at the bargaining table.

Used Car Buying Tips

auto363 » 18 August 2009 » In Used Car » No Comments

Some of these used car buying tips won’t be new to you. Often the trick is just to apply what you already know. On the other hand, when it comes to expensive areas of life like buying a car, one new thing learned can save you hundreds of dollars. Try some of the following.

For more information on cars buying visit http://car-buying.am-articles.com/

1. Make a low offer. Okay, you knew this one. A trick you may not have used, though, is to make a low offer, and then leave your phone number with the seller. Time has a way of making sellers desperate, especially after you just helped convince them that they are asking too much.

2. Be careful with car price guides. Use the “blue book” etc, but try not to pay more than wholesale. I can’t think of many times when people I know have paid more than “bluebook,” so these “average” sales prices are doubtful.

3. Talk to people. This is one of the simplest and effective used car buying tips. Just let friends, family and others know you’re looking for a car. Quite often people would be happy to avoid the whole process of advertising and showing their car if they could just get rid of it by giving a good deal to a friend.

4. Check out the engine. Have a mechanic look at the car, and tell you what it’s likely to need in the next year or so. Then make a list, so the seller can see in writing why you are offering less than he wants.

5. Auctions. See if there is a public auction in your area. If not, maybe you can go with a dealer friend and give him a $100 to buy a car for you.

6. www.carfax.com. It’s around $25 to run vehicle background checks for a month – long enough to find your next car. They’ll show the chain of title, accident reports for the car, and even safety and reliability scores for that model.

7. “Ugly” cars. Watch for cars that sit on the lot for months. Dealers will often sell these “ugly ducklings” at a loss just to move them. Again, you may want to leave your phone number with a low offer.

8. Rental company cars. They are sold fairly cheap when they get the new ones in. Buy at bluebook wholesale or less, because they have had many different drivers, so they’ve more wear than normal.

9. Repos. Credit unions and some small banks do their own selling of repossessed cars. You usually bid on paper, maybe with a $50 deposit, and then get your $50 back if you’re not the winning bidder. If they don’t sell their own repossessions, ask where they are sold.

10. Consider gas mileage. High mileage may be better, but maybe a car that costs $500 less will use only $400 more gas in the two years you expect to own it. Do the math.

Use the tips here the next time you are shopping for a used car. Meanwhile, why not learn a few negotiating strategies. This helps in many areas of life, and is the most important of these used car buying tips.

Three Important Car Repair Shop Tips

auto363 » 11 June 2009 » In Auto Repair » No Comments

Cars break down. It is unavoidable, but when they do, finding a good mechanic can be a challenge. Many of us have a healthy amount of cynicism about the car repair industry. News reports of fraudulent activity or personal experience with repair shops hard sales tactics have made us vigilant. While it is good to be alert for possible fraud, most car mechanics are honest, hard-working, and devoted to their craft. When your car is experiencing problems, they want to help. In this article, I will explain how you can find an auto repair shop that is best-suited for your circumstances.

Tip number 1: Look For A Specialist

Some repair shops are generalists. They can work on just about any type of mechanical or electrical problem. That said, because of the breadth of their skills, they tend not to be experts in any particular area. Specialists focus on one or two areas of expertise. For example, many car technicians will work primarily on transmissions. Others will focus on resolving problems in a car’s exhaust system. While such specialists may not be able to handle every type of repair job, they are uniquely qualified for their area of expertise. Consider having a specialist perform the repair work on your car. They’re often more knowledgeable and efficient than other mechanics.

Tip number 2: Trust, But Verify

Trusting a mechanic to work on your car may seem counterintuitive, but it is important to allow them to do their jobs. A lot of people are nearly paranoid of being charged for parts and labor that are unnecessary. So, they will hover around the technician, making sure the job is done properly. That can be stifling for a mechanic. Trust them with their area of expertise. That said, it is always a good idea to get a written estimate. You should also ask the repair shop to call you before starting work that will cost more than the estimate. Finally, if you’re having parts replaced, ask that the old parts be returned to you.

Tip Number 3: Communicate Clearly

When you are talking with a car technician, focus on the symptoms of the problem. It does not matter if you think the alternator needs to be replaced. Explain the symptoms and let the mechanic figure it out. Chances are, he is going to run a diagnostic test which will help him identify the components that need to be repaired or replaced.

Getting Your Car Fixed

Whether you are having a tune up performed on a new car or major work done on a used car, use the 3 tips above to find a suitable auto repair shop. Try to find a specialist who can perform the work efficiently. Learn to trust your mechanic and communicate the symptoms you have noticed. And finally, remember that most car technicians are hard-working and honest people. They want to help you solve your cars problems.

Car Repair Prices: There Are No Honest Mechanics!

auto363 » 11 June 2009 » In Auto Repair » No Comments

I enjoy reading the tips and suggestions on finding an honest or good mechanic. These can be found on various government and consumer websites, and in a variety of auto repair articles. I think the same guy wrote all the suggestions, and for all 50 states!

You’ll be advised to check around by word of mouth (WOM), and make sure that you see ASE or AAA posted somewhere. Check out the facility—make sure it’s clean. Check with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). You’ll be acronymed and common-sense-suggested to death. Unfortunately, none of it will really help either for quality or price.

I know AAA certified shops that can barely change oil. I have worked with ASE certified technicians that frightened me with their diagnostic theories. I know shops that are considered great that have serious BBB scars.

And WOM is the worst method. I have heard clients rave about how wonderful a particular shop is when “I KNOW it’s run by a thief!”

The sad fact is that very few people know what goes on with car repair, and even less comprehend repair pricing—even shop managers and purported experts in the field know very little.

Tips and suggestions only scratch at the surface of the automotive underworld. Sure, some tips might help. But what’s really needed is experienced insider information.

The consumer needs to know what really goes on with repair “pricing” in order to make sense of auto repair costs. With the right guidance and information, the playing field can be leveled, and the automotive customer can easily take charge of car repair prices.

Traditional tips and suggestions are only a band-aid on an open, gaping wound. Relying on these is like trusting a blind man to lead you across a major interstate. You might make it, but wouldn’t you rather follow a traffic cop.

When You Will Need Auto Body Repair

auto363 » 03 June 2009 » In Auto Repair » No Comments

Auto repair can be a costly fix when times are tight. But there is damage to your car that could be just cosmetic. If you have been in an accident and your car has been damaged, you will want to have the damage checked out, but if it is only superficial, you have a choice as to whether you want to get it fixed right away, later down the road, or at all.

The first step after an accident that damages your car is make sure the insurance company and the police know about it. These steps usually happen within hours of the accident so that everyone who needs to know about it is properly informed. Next, you will want to get the car checked out to see how bad the damage is. This is not getting it fixed, necessarily, so if you are using someone other than who the insurance company wants you to, you should be fine.

So what constitutes damage severe enough to use an auto body repair shop? Most of the time, the repairs that will need to be made are ones that will affect your driving. If you just have a few dents and scratches on your car, these repairs can obviously wait. But if you cannot operate the car properly or the damage will inhibit the drivers around you, it is time to go to the auto repair shop.

If you want to take your car to the auto repair shop as soon as you have had your accident, you will want to make sure to contact your insurance company to see if they have specific auto repair shops that they want you to go to. Otherwise, it is up to you to find the right auto repair shop to fix your car.

It is very important to follow the guidelines of your insurance policy. If you decide that you want to use a mechanic or auto repair shop that is not approved by your insurance company, you will have to be prepared to pay much of the cost out of pocket. This usually isn’t what most people want, because the cost of the deductible is usually hard enough to come up with.

Once you have picked your auto repair, shop, you will want to check it out for the quality of the work and the fairness of the prices. Ask a friend or family member who have used this particular shop before. If it is recommended by your insurance, you know that the quality of the work should be top rate. But if you have chosen this auto repair shop on your own, you will want to check out what the place looks like, get an estimate on the damage, and talk to the manager of the shop before you commit to one auto repair shop. This will save you a lot of money and time in the end when you send in your car to get fixed.

Avoiding Foreclosure Tips-Saving Money On Car Repair

auto363 » 03 June 2009 » In Auto Repair » No Comments

When trying to avoid foreclosure, it comes down to one main thing; you need money to pay your bills on time.  With today’s economy, low paying jobs and lack of available work every penny you earn counts.  It counts towards, keeping or saving your home and giving your family a secure future.

This is my third article on money saving tips to stop a foreclosure.  The first article tells you how you can save several thousand dollars a year on grocery’s, article number two tells you how to save on clothing and this particular article will deal with saving money on car repairs.  If you have a car it doesn’t matter if it’s a couple years or twenty years old — you going to spend money on keeping it in shape.  There are some tips and tricks of the trade though that may help cut down on some of your mechanical expenses.

Get A Second Opinion and Estimate

If you were going to a doctor and they told you, that you would need to get this, that and this done; you would probably get a second opinion, before you just jump onto an operating table.  Treat your car the same way; get a second opinion.

By getting a second look at your car by a different mechanic, you can confirm what the first mechanic told you and you can get a second estimate of costs.  This is very important because most car mechanics prices can vary significantly.  One person may quote you $1800 for a job, while a second mechanic may do for only $900.  That is a big difference so it is very important to get a second opinion and estimate on your car’s repairs or maintenance.

Watch Out For Scammers

How often have you gone into a car shop to get your oil changed and all of sudden you find yourself buying brake lights or a new spark plugs or a oil filter?  It is always something, isn’t it?  Make sure if someone is examining your car for one thing, they don’t try to up sell you something you may not need.

This is another reason why a second look at your car with another mechanic is important.  Especially if every time you visit your current mechanic for one thing, they prescribe ten things.  See how many times this happens where you do business; if it starts becoming a pattern, it may be time to look for a new mechanic.

Buy Your Own Car Parts

Some mechanics have been known to charge a 50% mark up on parts.  This is good chunk of change and worth looking into alternative options for parts.  Even if you don’t know how to do the labor on a car, you can bring the parts you find for a cheaper price to the garage and just pay for labor.

Check out major auto parts stores since they will usually be cheaper then your mechanic’s garage.  Or look in the classifieds if it is a major part because someone may be selling just what you need.  Or possibly, check out a scrap yard and see what they have.  This could just save you several thousand dollars.

Learn To Do Some Of Your Own Repairs

There are some simple repairs you can do on your own car, which can end up saving you saving you more than 80% on labor prices.  For instance, if your car light goes out, a dealer will charge your $20 just to change the bulb.  If you buy your own bulb at an auto store it is probably around $2.  Then just do a little online research or look at some auto repair books and learn how to replace the bulb yourself.

So if you have any money concerns or are possibly worried about facing foreclosure in your future, read of the money saving tip articles and make every penny count.  How would you like to have an extra $10,000 in your pocket every year?  This can happen, if you put the time and effort into learning the tricks of the trade.  If your boss offered you a pay increase of $10,000, but you would have to do more work, you would likely take it.  This is same thing, put the work into saving money and you will have more money.
