During Troubled Times Car Repairs Make More Sense

auto363 » 04 August 2009 » In Auto Repair » No Comments

true within the United States is not always true in Canada. However, this is not the case when it comes to the recent economic recession. This economic downtown is worldwide, which makes economic news in the United States the same (if not similar) to the events happen in Canada. According to a recent U.S. based survey prompted by AAMCO, more consumers are neglecting to purchase new cars. Instead, consumers are attempting to save money by repairing aging cars.

Mike Ganjei (AAMCO Dealers Association) recently stated (based on the AAMCO study findings) that “consumers clearly prefer maintaining and repairing their cars rather than buying new ones” (Reuters). Making necessary adjustments to existing automobiles makes a lot of sense during these dire times. Canadian consumers are following suit by bringing cars to repair centers rather than purchasing new ones.

Garages have seen a rise in business over the past few months due to this car repair phenomenon. In fact, the car repair business might be one of the few businesses that are “recession proof.” For most consumers, repairing an existing vehicle is a much better option (and much less of a monetary commitment) than purchasing a new one. The problem is that not all consumers can afford to repair their cars due to a lack of cash flow.

Add this cash flow problem to the fact that most people need their cars to get to and from work (or to look for new work), and the entire situation looks rather grim. The good news (as some consumers are now finding out) is that there’s a new kind of loan on the market that provides a bit of wiggle-room when it comes to car repairs. Some private lenders are issuing “car repair loans” that prove to be lifesaving in this economy.

Car repair loans do not require a spotless credit history, though they do often require car ownership. Those that can qualify for these loans are joining the ranks of those that have found car repairs to be a much wiser solution to an aging automobile problem. While “buying a new car is a major investment and perhaps not an option at this time for some consumers because of the troubled economy and uncertainty in the job market…” (Reuters), repairing one’s car is an all-around better option. Thanks to unique car repair loans, all consumers (no matter what their job situation might be) have a viable transportation option.

Auto Recyclers Provide Opportunity to Save Big on Car Repairs

auto363 » 04 August 2009 » In Auto Repair » No Comments

With so many industries in the United States taking hits in earnings, there is one that is actually thriving and helping individuals save money at the same time.  The auto recycling industry isn’t shrinking, its growing and there are several key factors driving this boom in business.  The most important one involves saving the average consumer a substantial amount of money on vehicle repairs.

Anytime there is a down turn in an economy, people generally seek out ways to save money on every front possible.  Since vehicle repairs are usually a necessity not a luxury, it is only logical to assume that if there is a way to cut the cost of that necessity, people will utilize it.  Choosing to repair a vehicle with quality used parts is a definite way to save money.  Up until recently, choosing the option of used parts over new ones was not necessarily the first choice for most.  However, with so many losing jobs, this option is now the first one chosen because of the huge savings to be had.  Parts bought from automotive recyclers can be up to 75% less than the cost of buying the part new from the dealership.  That is a tremendous savings that shouldn’t be left on the table.

The cost of repairing an automobile usually can be broken down into two parts: the cost of the part and the cost of the labor to install the part.  Mechanics generally charge a certain amount per hour to repair a vehicle.  This time usually includes the removal of the part, any work necessary to prep the vehicle for the new part and the installation of the new part.  While there’s not much that can be done about the cost of the labor, it is possible to do something about the cost of the part needed to effect the repair.  By choosing to use a quality used part, the cost of the repair can be cut signicantly.  For example, I recently needed to replace the dual mass flywheel in my 2004 Volkswagen Beetle.  The mechanic gave me an estimate of $1500.00.   To break this down, the labor for the repair was going to be around $800.00 because it is a long intricate process to remove and replace this particular part.  There’s not much to be done about that process.  However,  I did a little research and found that to buy the part new from the dealership would cost $700.00.   That’s a little less than half the cost of the total repair.  I got online and did a little looking.  In about 10 minutes I was able to locate the part myself at an auto recycler that was located about 100 miles away. The price for this part including shipping was $300.00.  That is a savings of $400.00!  My mechanic did not have a problem with installing a used part.  Choosing this option saved me a substantial amount of money.  I even got a warranty on the part from the auto recycler.  Needless to say auto recyclers can be a valuable resource when it comes to auto repairs.

Study Reports on Saving Gas, Car Repair and Maintenance

auto363 » 28 June 2009 » In Auto Repair » No Comments

rs are serious. A repair order is a contract for work. Car repairs are very important for maintaining a car in a well-functional condition, and they are critical for preventing auto accidents. So, maybe it’s worth to shut our eyes to those unpleasant aspects of tune-ups, and think what are the best options for car repairs? Car repairs are expensive, but by keeping your car well-maintained, being informed as a consumer and choosing your mechanic wisely, you can reduce those car repair bills significantly.

The engine parts kits we offer include complete tune-up kits, valve cover replacement kits, oil pump repair kits, timing cover replacement kits, timing kits, rocker arm kits and engine mount kits. After all, if a customer takes his bicycle in for a tune-up, he knows the bicycle mechanic won’t install new spark plugs, but he does expect the bike to perform better when the work is completed. The brakes will be adjusted, the tires aired up, the chain oiled, and so on, all under the guise of a “tune-up.”. Your vehicle may only require a standard tune-up. However, if you are experiencing any performance problems, advanced diagnostics may be needed.

Today’s 100,000 mile tune-up interval also skirts around the issue of fuel and air filter replacement, too. A number of new cars and trucks now have “lifetime” fuel filters, most of which are located inside the fuel tank with the electric fuel pump. The tune-up is not a cure-all for an engine that has spun its last revolution or has problems beyond that which can be cured by replacing a few worn out parts. Engine brake removal is a part of the process in the maintenance of your engine’s fuel injectors and valve settings, therefore it’s an ideal time to perform engine brake maintenance. Make safety a priority.

A good place to begin the tune-up is with the distributor cap. Note position of cap. When you take you car for a tune-up, you rightfully expect to get better mileage and performance after the tune-up is completed. You may not expect to get extended engine life thrown in, but anything done to make the engine more efficient will make it last longer.

The spark plugs are especially important because a worn spark plug will cause poor starting, rough idling, and poor gas mileage. Keep the gas tank as full as possible. More condensation will form in a half-full tank than in a three-fourths full tank.

The cooling system protects against damage, keeping the engine operating within the correct temperature range. Surveys among auto mechanics indicate the cooling system is among the most neglected aspects of car care. These simple steps save you money by improving your vehicle’s gas mileage and extending the life of your tires, while also reducing air pollution and preventing tires from being added to you city’s waste stream.

Additives displace protective chemicals in gasoline and engine oil; some may corrode fuel pumps or gas tanks, or make flexible fuel hoses and fittings brittle. Instead of enhancing engine life and economy, users might shorten their car’s life.

Whether you are shopping for a new car or just trying to maintain the one you have, you can take some steps to increase fuel efficiency and get the best mileage out of your gas purchases. Plus, you can help protect the environment by using less fuel. Black smoke means there is too much gas in the air/fuel mixture and the fuel injection system should be checked. Blue smoke means the engine is burning oil and excess hydrocarbons are being released.

Using 5W-30 in an engine designed for 5W-20 can lower your gas mileage by 1-1.5 percent. Also, look for motor oil that says “Energy Conserving” on the API performance symbol to be sure it contains friction-reducing additives.

Most CO is produced when air-to-fuel ratios are too low in the engine during vehicle starting, when cars are not tuned properly, and at higher altitudes, where thin air reduces the amount of oxygen available for combustion. Two-thirds of the carbon monoxide emissions come from transportation sources, with the largest contribution coming from highway motor vehicles. When it comes to important inventions, the internal combustion engine has to be near the top of the list. Unlike most steam engines that preceded them, internal combustion engines are small enough to fit in personal vehicles, such as cars. Also if the rings wear down they can allow oil from the crankcase to enter the combustion chambers. This will result in oil being burned and exiting your tailpipe as grayish/white smoke.

They use a fuel, like gasoline or diesel, that combusts to perform work. Motors are used in electric cars, power drills, R/C cars, etc., and use electrical energy (supplied by a battery) to perform work. Adding direct injection and turbos to internal-combustion engines typically costs automakers about $1,000 per vehicle, compared with $3,000 for diesel engines and $4,000 for a gas-electric hybrid. There is such a thing as an external combustion engine. A steam engine in old-fashioned trains and steam boats is the best example of an external combustion engine.

Finally, concerning long trips: Before you travel in bad weather, check several resources to gather as much information as possible about the weather and road conditions. You and you alone are responsible for making the final decision to travel during periods of bad weather. If the temperature gauge or warning light does not indicate overheating, drive carefully to the nearest service station, keeping an eye on your gauge. If the odor is accompanied by a hot, metallic scent and steam from under the hood, your engine has overheated.

What Should You Pay for Car Repairs?

auto363 » 07 June 2009 » In Auto Repair » No Comments

The car repair industry in the U.K may be changing due to a new groundbreaking site, namely Shouldpay.co.uk. Shouldpay is the first site set up to show how much people should expect to pay for car repair work. It uses historical price data from garages all over the U.K to give an accurate assessment of how much consumers should pay for various car repair jobs. The service is completely free and all the prices are specific to your exact car and the area you live in.

Rigourous testing showed that the software was 95% accurate and the feedback from thousands of consumers has been amazing. Graeme Wingate, managing director of Shouldpay said in a recent interview ” in the new era of comparison services, it was inevitable that this type of comparison software would become available to the public, we are just happy that it is Shouldpay that got there first and set the standard for others to follow.”

The repair costs calculator produces a printable price estimate broken down into parts and labour for the consumer to scan and if necessary take to their garage. Most people have a story about being overcharged by a garage, and while most garages are very honest and fair, this should help to weed out the small percentage that still overcharge their customers.

Graeme had thought of the idea many months ago but setting up the system took longer than expected and in total after six full months of manually inputing over 60,000 prices and jobs, it was completed and launched in February 2008. “It was a huge and monotonous task, and had we known the extent of the task before we started it we may have had second thoughts about taking it on at all” joked Graeme.

“There were easier ways to get all the data into the site, but the way we did it ensures that the software is near impossible to replicate so it was worth the extra effort.”

Shouldpay.co.uk have promised even more groundbreaking developments to come in the near future with a new service due to launch in July 2008 that they believe will revolutionize the way people go about choosing a garage and getting their car repaired.
