How to Select Your First Used Car

auto363 » 30 July 2009 » In Used Car » No Comments

If you’re buying your first used car, you should know by now that this experience will influence how you manage your future purchases.  Used cars can offer a lot of value for people who want to save money.  But to the uninformed, they can be a total waste of time, effort and hard-earned money.  Still, used cars can be good buys – provided, of course, that you know what to look for.  Here are some used car buying tips to keep in mind when you’re in the market for one:

Compare everything

Before you go to a used car lot or pay for a secondhand car you find online, do your assignment first.  Decide on the type of used vehicle you want, the size, year, make/model and brand.  Next, consider your budget, give or take a few hundred dollars that you’re willing to spare for a good buy.

You can also go online to check car features side-by-side.  Websites such as Cars.com, CarDirect and AutoTrader.com to name a few, allow you to search and then compare results based on categories you choose.  Try this several times to get an idea of what you can expect from the market.

Learn to know what to look for

It will help a great deal if you know how to inspect cars yourself.  But if you don’t, bring someone who is knowledgeable about cars, such as a mechanic or a friendly hobbyist.  Inspect the car physically – take a look under the hood, check the tires, inspect the interiors.  Test drive the unit if it’s allowed.

Check the car’s history

When buying a used car, it pays to know about its past.  You can do this three ways:

1)    Ask.  Great if the past owner is willing to talk.  Too bad if they won’t tell you.

2)    Inspect.  The kind of experience a car has undergone will leave telltale signs.  These include rusting, burns and other evidence of wear and tear.  If you know how to interpret what you see, you could easily check whether the used car you’re eyeing is a good buy or not.

3)    Run a history report.  Get the VIN number of the used car you like and then run it through a vehicle history report service such as AutoCheck and CARFAX.  These services will dig out past data regarding the car, such as records of damages, repairs and even violations.

Ask for the extended auto warranty

This is an important thing to consider when buying used cars, especially those that are over 3 years old.  This will provide coverage for any repairs that might have to be performed after you drive the car off the lot.

Negotiate the final price

In majority of sales transactions involving used cars, the buyer gets to have a good deal by simply negotiating the price.  Don’t be afraid to do this.  Used car dealers and owners are familiar with this ritual.  Besides, the only way you can get a car at a fair price is if you haggle.

Expenses of Car Repair

auto363 » 29 July 2009 » In Auto Repair » No Comments

Getting a car repaired can be a major setback for anyone’s budget. People pay more for car repair sometimes than they do for the cost of buying the car itself. Why does car repair seem so expensive? Knowing a bit about how the auto shop business works can help answer this question and also help you find ways ensuring you get the best car repair deal possible next time your vehicle breaks down.

The Labor Costs

A good portion of any given car repair’s cost is going to come from the labor. Even if the parts required for the job are not expensive, you’ll be paying for the time and effort given by the mechanics. This is especially true in cases where the part in need of repair is hard to reach and requires taking a different section of the car apart in order to get to it.

Not all car repair shops charge the same for labor, though, so it is in your best interest to shop around. Some shops will charge $60 per hour for major repairs, and some may charge a lot more, or perhaps less. The range is considerable.

Also, be aware that if you have to stop, because of an emergency, at a roadside car repair shop, the price of the repair will likely be higher than usual. This is because you’ll be paying for convenience.

Car Parts

Buying the car parts needed for a repair directly from the car shop will usually be more expensive than if you find them on your own. Car shops usually look to make a profit by marking up car parts by as much as 30% over the MSRP or more.

If you have a vintage or luxury vehicle, parts will also be more expensive. Sometimes parts will only be available directly from the manufacturer, or they will be no longer made new and therefore harder to track down.

One good way of saving money is to ask, once the mechanics do their estimate, to know what parts will be needed for the job. Then, go online and order the parts on discount.

Simple Maintenance

Another way to avoid overpaying for car maintenance is to learn to do some of the simple stuff (like oil changes) yourself. There are plenty of tasks that you can learn easily and quickly and that will save you many a trip to the mechanic.

How to Find the Best Buy – Cheap Used Cars

auto363 » 22 May 2009 » In Used Car » No Comments

When a person wants to buy a car, he has the option of choosing between a new car and an old one. Yet, he wants to always get the best deal, which is buying a used car for a cheap price. He should know how to go about the process of getting the best cheap used car.

The first thing that you should fix for yourself is the budget that you have allotted for the car that you want to buy. Then only you should go about looking at cars. This will mean that you are not swayed by the look of a car. Since you have fixed a budget for yourself, you should concentrate on the mechanical and the functional aspects of the car.

Check out at least fifteen cars before you decide to buy one. You should take someone who knows about the mechanical functioning of the car. This will help you to decide whether it is worthy of buying or not.

Before you buy a car you should definitely do a thorough research about the model and year of the car you are interested in. You should be able to judge the mechanical condition of the car, see that the outer appearance of the car is good (that it does not have any dents and color peeling), that the service records have been kept properly and if the car has been involved in any accident.

After you have checked out as many as fifteen cars and you narrow down you choice to three, you should again test drive them. Based on your research and the test drive, be sure to ask all the questions to get the details of the car. Do not think that any question might be silly. Ask if the car has had one or many owners. Ask if it has been used for carpooling. Ask if people have smoked in the car. Ask if any major parts have been repaired or replaced. Ask if it has been involved in any accident. Also find out if it has been driven in places where the temperatures might have been extreme. All these small details will help you decide on the car you want to buy. One car might be better than the other in some of these respects.

When you are ready to buy the car and want to negotiate the price, take someone with you. It is best to take a person who knows about the working of the car. The price quoted can generally be brought down by about 10% to 15%. It is good to haggle and get the price down.

After you have come to an agreement on a price, you should condition the sale on an inspection. This means that you will want the car to have structural and mechanical inspection to your satisfaction. If the dealer is not ready for this, then you should be hesitant in buying the car. This inspection might cost a few hundred dollars more. It might give you some information about the car that might have been missed by you in your test drive. But it will give you peace of mind later.

When it is time to pay the money, do not pay it in cash. Give a cashier’s check or a money order. Get all the details of the sale – a detailed bill, the condition of the car at the time of the sale, the contact information of the buyer and the seller and the terms of the sale. Be sure to know who will pay for anything that goes wrong with the car. Any oral agreement is hard to be kept up. Generally used cars are sold in “as is” condition.

When you buy a car take into account the money you will be spending on registration, taxes, license plates and insurance. Do not be swayed by the appearance of the car or by peer pressure. Listen to people who are knowledgeable about cars. In this way you can make the best buy of a cheap used car.

How To Go About Buying A Used Car

auto363 » 09 April 2009 » In Used Car » No Comments

When buying a used car, you will find that satisfaction is not that easy to achieve. We all know that a car is a long-term investment for all of us, so buying one requires a lot of thinking and inspection. This becomes especially more difficult if you have specific preferences and feature on the car. Looking for your ideal car would become more demanding and require more time and attention.

It is important to assess your financial situation first before venturing out to look for a used car to buy. After all, how can you buy car if you don’t have the money for it? You should make sure your budget fits with your lifestyle and other financial concerns. You should also look into your long-term goals in life, and whether buying a used car now will be worth it or not. If you can see that you’ll still be using your car in the future, then there’s no problem. Remember that a car is a long-term investment. Buying a car and only using it for a short while is not exactly a practical solution.

You should also assess your current lifestyle if a car is really needed or not. For example, if you have a family and you like going out to shop or travel together, then it’s a good idea to buy a car. Same goes if your office is far from home and a car is a more practical choice than taking the bus or a taxi. But if you live alone and your office is near enough, you might do well without a car.

When you’ve finally gotten around to a decision that you need a car, then it’s time to choose one. Take note of what you want and need in a car. Research on the kinds of cars and consider your choices according to your wants and needs. You can make a list if you want to. If you find that your list of desired features has made your options too limited, ten you can always try to expand to other cars that you haven’t considered but can offer more than what you’re looking for.

Once you’ve narrowed your prospects to a few cars, you can start going around your area to look at the used cars for sale. Look into used car outlets and dealerships. You can also ask your friends and relatives if they know of someone who is selling their car. Buying a car from a private party is better most of the time since this will be from someone you know and you can know more about the history of car and its value.

The Internet is also a great source nowadays. A lot of used car outlets have websites put up so that potential buyers can search for a car without too much trouble in going around the town. If you see a car online that appeals to you, call the car outlet and ask about the car. Take a look at the car personally, too, and make the necessary inspections and research.

When you’ve finally found a great choice for you, then it’s time to settle the papers. Remember to ask about the car’s history, and consult with experienced buyers of used cars as to how to make a good choice and how to get about the sale.
